As of May, the only person/organization financially supporting me will be I struggle in finding a job lifestyle. No more student loans and no more tax-free wages. The perks of being a student will be gone. This means it’s time to start applying for a new job, one that is going to kick start my career, or at least provide me with financial stability in the meantime.
I quite enjoy job searching, I love coming across the unusual jobs. What I don’t enjoy, however, and when I say don’t enjoy, I mean hate, is the number of jobs that “require experience”. This is one of the things that annoy me, probably more than it should and I’m going to explain why.
First of all, I understand there are a lot of jobs that involve tasks in which a company can’t risk getting wrong and roles that require particular knowledge and qualifications. I’m specifically talking about the experience of doing that particular job role.
I feel as though too many companies now are, either too greedy to provide training to somebody without experience or, simply don’t realize the possible long term benefits. I find it extremely frustrating that a huge amount of these companies that aren’t willing to take risks with inexperienced people are companies that are more than likely in a position where taking the risk wouldn’t affect them.
Throughout college and university, you are told to gain as much experience in whatever industry you want to go into. It’s good advice if you can find companies willing to allow you to do a placement with them. Again though, there are way too many companies refusing to give people opportunities due to having to pay for insurance or something.
I understand that other factors limit companies but I can’t help believing that, more and more often now, we are expected to take the routes with continuous obstacles. There are hundreds of people who are hardworking and loyal individuals who are missing out because of one of a few things:
Companies aren’t willing to take risks
The opportunities aren’t available where they live (& it’s not easy to just up and move with no financial stability)
Attitudes towards inexperienced people wear people down and eventually, they give up.
